About our cause
The Association of Northern Trails Scotland is a small local charity based in Caithness with the goal to develop the Trail through volunteer efforts and community support, in order to improve walking access for the community as well as develop the local tourism economy by opening trails to long-distance walkers.
Our original trail, The John O'Groats Trail, is a 147 mile coastal walking route from Inverness to John o’ Groats, traversing shorelines, cliff tops, back lanes and footpaths of the Scottish Highlands. With the help of amazing groups of volunteers, we have created the trail you see today. The trail is constantly developing, and becoming more accessible. By building bridges, stiles and stairs we can make the trail more user friendly and a better walking experience.
We have a new exciting project in the development stages, the North Coast Trail. This 150 mile route, will start in John O'Groats finishing out west in Cape Wrath. It will showcase the best of the north coast of Scotland, white beaches, beautiful bays and coves, waterfalls, and amazing wildlife.
We are passionate about creating long lasting accessible trails for the communities of the North of Scotland to be able to benefit from green health, this not only increases physical wellbeing but mental and social health and well-being also. Scotland has endless beautiful scenery on offer, we are so proud that the trails uncover so many of these hidden gems and wildlife along its path which only enriches walkers' enjoyment further. It is so important to preserve our natural environment, and by giving the public a way to experience it by leaving the cars at home and exploring on foot is key to making sure this happens.
By supporting us through the Highland Community Lottery, you can help us acheive all these goals. The purchase of your ticket could be put toward helping us waymark the route, build a set of stairs up a scrambly hill or even a bridge over a tricky water crossing. Every little bit makes a big difference.
Good Luck- You've got to be in it to win it!
